Rebellious artists may go too far sometimes, and we can all think of examples of this, but I feel that we can't really do too much to remedy this problem. The only way to sort out the troublemakers would be to put limits and boundaries into contemporary art, and that can never be allowed, otherwise the foundations of contemporary art itself would collapse overnight.

Contemporary art is the right to totally express yourself freely. Even if some artists do express the wrong, or possibly overly controversial, ideas, then, in my view, the authorities should deal with these problems individually, and as infrequently as they occur. There shouldn't be laws within the realms of the art world; otherwise real contemporary art would be impossible.

What to Think About When Creating Art

I you want to be an artist but you are not a classically trained painter then abstract art paintings are the way to go. Creating abstract art is easy. It is you subconscious self that produces this art, that's why abstract paintings are always very interesting and appeals to different people in different ways.

If you use paper, the type of paper you should use will depend on what kind of paint you are using. For starters I recommend acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is easier to use because it dries faster. Using oil paint can get messy because it won't dry at all during one session and when beginners use oils they end up mixing all paint he/she has into a grey-brown abstract art blur.

You have 2 options when purchasing paper to paint on, it can either be primed or unprimed. If it's not primed, just apply a thin layer of paint(don't dilute it) and let it dry, but I recommend the former.

When your first starting out you want to buy the cheapest acrylic paint available because we're assuming you're only trying to amuse yourself at this point and with cheap paint you can splash it around freely not worrying about making your money back in profit.

One of the keywords in our approach to abstract art is spontaneity. This means letting your brush take control, allowing yourself to be like a shaman in a trance. The other side of abstract art - and of any other kind of art - is using your intelligence to guide your animal instincts.

Now, intelligence is a very nasty word, evoking images of geeks, nerds and other professors, but let me tell you this: You possess intelligence. And you're going to use it to paint abstract art, or else you'll end up an abstract expressionist with loads of talent but with helpless paintings. What we need is a plan.

What would you like to paint? What great artist would you like to be? Van Gogh, Mondrian, Bosch, Michelangelo, Klee, Chagall? To be a copy-cat is an excellent way to start painting, not just abstract art. This has been seen throughout history, where many historians attributed the success of many great French artists to their studies at the Louvre where they studied the techniques of great artists of the past. This is an accepted practice as long as you are aware of what forgery means and you don't attempt to do it. Copying is too strong a word for our purposes, by the way, because we will try to stimulate your imagination, but with a plan - and a little help.

You can also go about it in a different way, depending on how abstract you want your paintings to be. If you feel drawn to abstract expressionism, you may want to start painting without any plan and create as big a mess as possible, right away. That is, you paint random forms by instinct, without a preconceived plan. If painting this way you must know when to start and when to stop. A beginner will have a tendency of painting layer over layer and merging down most of the painting's color. Try not to paint layer over layer in a random, uncontrolled way. Be careful not to over paint things, if you are the least bit tired stop and wait to continue until the next session. Don't assume you can get your paintings done in one go, it takes discipline and judgment to know when to stop and wait for new insight and ideas.

So suppose you have started a painting that looks expressive. One possible way to elaborate on it is to take a small sized brush and try to accentuate the most relevant elements of your painting. You don't do this by thinking about it in a conscious sort of way, but try to imagine what it would feel like if you applied this brush stroke in that color to that location. Painting is intuition so just go with it. I can't expect you to understand everything I've said on this page, but I think you'll recognize many things as you get more experience. If I can make you think about your painting, instead of just messing about mindlessly (which for a beginner is the natural thing to do), then I think we have gained something. - 32620

Scanning the world of the world wide web, I came across an astonishing artist known as Donalee Houston. Simply amazed by her artistic talents I could not help devote a lot of my attention to her works and unique styles.

Types Of Aviation Art Lithographs

When choosing aviation art lithographs it is important to do some research and have a basic understanding of the categories of lithographs that are made. Collecting lithographs has become very popular because it allows individuals to purchase exquisite pieces for a fraction of the cost of an original work.

The creation of a lithograph is very detailed and complex. The finished product is the result of several passes on a lithographer's press which distributes color on the paper. At a minimum, four colors are required to obtain a full color spectrum and the shading of the pieces requires further passes through the press. When completed the lithograph is an exact replica of the original piece of art.

Selecting the lithograph that will become most valuable from a collector's standpoint will depend on the category of print you select. An individual who is collecting a specific series of aviation art may find that the pieces in one category provide more options and potential added value than another category.

Lithographs that are collected are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity that is signed by the artist in a graphite pencil. The use of the pencil in signing protects the certificate from any possibilities of forgery. The print may be numbered and if so, selected a number from one to fifty increases the value of the print from the time you select it.

A popular lithograph that is extremely affordable is the Open Edition lithograph. This print does not have any limitation on the number of prints made, nor is it numbered. One way that this print will increase dramatically in value is when the artist has added a Remarque to the print. This is a small object or doodle that is related to the lithograph in the margin of the print. The Remarque makes the piece a unique print that cannot be duplicated and thus becomes one of a kind.

A Limited Edition is one of the more common types of lithographs sold. These pieces are numbered, signed by the artist, and have a limited number of printings. They are not reprinted once the series has been completed and the original printing plates are destroyed after the last print has been made. This insures that the value of the print will increase with time.

Choosing a Master Edition lithograph will result in attaining a lithograph that is extremely collectible and will gain in value as the original does. These pieces are usually hand detailed by the artist and have some unique features included in the print that are unique to the other lithographs in the series. The artist will normally sign the lithograph as well as the certificate of authenticity.

When aviation art lithographs are made for veterans, they have the special designation of Veteran Edition. These prints are signed and are restricted to a specific group of veterans. These prints are also not reprinted after the designated number has been printed.

Diplomats and museums are often provided lithographs that are exact replicas of an original piece. These lithographs are printed on canvas and have very find details hand painted by the artist. The pieces are numbered and signed. When the Presidential Proof is printed there may only be a few in a series before the plates are destroyed. - 32620

As a result, you might want to invest in faux wooden shutters for your window exteriors. Due to advances in manufacturing, you can get faux wooden shutters that look just like real wood, so you wouldn't be sacrificing in aesthetic; however, they would be a lot more durable and less susceptible to precipitation that can otherwise damage wood shutters and blinds, which makes them perfect for most homes.

You can even get faux wood shutters for far less money than real wood shutters can cost. However, if you insist on acquiring wooden shutters, it's recommended by most that you get basswood, as it won't warp nearly as easily as other types of wood, and can stand up to more punishment in general.

What Is Your Opinion on Art?

Is abstraction art? When you look up the word in a dictionary it defines it as a sort of form or an act. It is also defined as "a conscious esthetically meaningful arrangement of elements." This definition can be confusing and if you think about really does not say much. So we will move forward and do an analysis of the definitions keywords to try and clear up a bit of this confusion.

Conscious the first word to be examined literally means intentional. After that comes the word esthetically which is a reference to something in the beautiful realm. The third word "entity" which is the most prominent can be translated into an entity of sorts. After careful calculation we can now translate the definition a bit further in saying that art is executed deliberately, that art can be organized in a particular manner, and that there has to be some sense of beauty to it. Beauty is a word that can be interpreted in many different ways this is because it can be used to define anything, a noun, a time period, or even an act. Here we recognize a conscious effort to unveil the beauty in something.

There are a multitude of art authors who all recognize 3 major characteristics in all art pieces. Some of these authors list more than this, but we will only go over 4 of them for now.

You will see that the most obvious characteristic of art is that it is made by men and that is intentional. Whatever the medium be it painting, sculpture, film, dance, or theatre it was created for the purpose of being a type of art. It is created from something (elements) be it paint, words, waves of sound which are all formed through expression.

We also see that another characteristic of art is that works of art always exhibit the artists attitudes, feelings, and thoughts. Through these pieces or compositions expressions are communicated and instilled into an audience affecting society.

The third and most exciting characteristic of art is that it is original. Every song, or piece, or painting that is created is done from scratch, it is a product of that artists mind. Artists have the ability to take things apart, then take those pieces and reform them into something new.

The final characteristic of art is that people accept that it is art. In other words, people have to believe art is art to make it art. This does not mean that the art has to be appreciated, it can actually be hated as long as people recognize it as "art". - 32620

The Inspiration of an Artist

Still life and seascapes, people and landscapes, children, construction workers and people walking on a beach. A variety of subjects fill the paintings of Chuck Rosenthal as he colors his scenes in oils and pastels.

As one looks at his paintings, one realizes he is a master of contrasts. Perhaps the painting of a woman on the beach with her child catches the eye, bright evening sunlight casting dark shadows. Or maybe a landscape makes the viewer linger, with the contrast of soft shadowy trees against a hard, straight, white building.

In an interview, Mr. Rosenthal was asked what inspired him to paint. The artist's answer was: contrasts. Particularly he mentioned "light and shade, contrasts of form (e.g., a broad, nondescript stretch of sky with strong geometric shapes silhouetted against it), counterpoint in the composition, subtleties of light, atmospheric effects on objects and in general, strong drawing, and objects receding into shadow and then erupting into the light."

What beautiful inspiration. His answer gives us some insight into what the artist sees when he looks at something. Try it yourself. Look closely as a person stands in the sunshine. Notice their hair. Notice where the hair is dark and where the hair is light. In sun, there are often parts of the hair that appear almost white, even if the person has dark hair. Notice how many variations of color there are in the person's hair, even though you know it is all one color. (That is, unless the lady has her hair highlighted.)

By doing the above, you will gain insight into how an artist views things, and what inspired Mr. Rosenthal's paintings. You can imagine capturing all those colors with paint on canvas.

Take a look again at Mr. Rosenthal's painting "Clearwater Construction Workers." That's contrast! The arched doorway shadows are almost black contrasted against the nearly white concrete of the sidewalks. The blue jeans that the workers are wearing exhibit similar contrasts - nearly white to black and all shades of blue in between. What wonderful colors.

Even the softness of the loose dirt contrasts against the hard concrete sidewalk. And the flowing soft lines of the men's clothing contrasts with the hard straight lines of the building and sidewalks.

There you have a secret of inspiration for painting, and a little look into how an artist views things. You can view others of Mr. Rosenthal's paintings and continue to observe the contrasts. And try viewing them in life. What fun! - 32620

Using Color To Sell Your Home

When painting your home for resale, choosing the right colors can make a huge difference in your paycheck at closing. For instance, did you know that the exterior color of houses selling most quickly is a certain shade of yellow, but that choosing the wrong shade of yellow can kill a sale?

You'll find many brochures in paint stores, showing various combinations of exterior paint colors. But most people don't realize that most of those combinations actually include three colors, and not just two. Limiting your exterior paint scheme to just two colors also limits your income potential.

For a fast sale, think fun colors and go for a third, or even a fourth, exterior color. Think "Disneyland Main Street," where every shop is painted in glorious multi-colors. Adding more colors will also add definition to the various architectural details of your home. Use gloss or semi-gloss paint on wood trim.

The Psychology of Exterior Colors

When choosing exterior colors, take the sales price of your home into account. Certain colors, especially muted, complex shades, attract wealthy or highly-educated buyers, whereas buyers with less income or less education generally prefer simpler colors. A complex color contains tints of gray or brown, and usually requires more than one word to describe, such as "sage green," as opposed to "green."

On the other hand, simple colors are straightforward and pure. Generally, houses in the lower price range sell faster and for higher prices when painted in simple colors like yellow or tan, accented by white, blue, or green trim.

The Psychology of Interior Colors

Using colored, rather than bland, white walls will increase your profit potential. Lynette Jennings tested the perception of room size and color, and discovered that a room painted white appeared only appeared larger to a few people when compared to an identical room painted in color - and the perceived difference was only about six inches! Most people also look better when surrounded by color, and feel happier, and since buyers pick houses that make them feel happy, that knowledge can put dollars in your pocket at closing!

Entryways should bring the exterior colors into the house. Repeating shades of the exterior throughout your home will make the entire home seem to be in harmony. My husband and I usually use lighter colors when painting the exteriors of our investment dollhouses, because it makes them appear larger. On the other hand, our cabin in the woods looks richer when painted a darker color. When we decided to have it painted, I considered the usual cabin colors of dark brown and barn red, but fell in love with Olympic's gorgeous "Gooseberry" plum color.

Popular Faux Painting Techniques

Add some color, depth, elegance and charm to your home using one or more of these popular faux painting techniques.

*Combing - Combing can give your walls a very dramatic look. First step is to paint your walls your base color and let dry completely - overnight is best. Next, mix your texture color with finishing glaze. Now when you start rolling on your next color, be sure and go from ceiling to floor for about three feet. Next, you take a dry comb or a wallpaper brush and drag it from ceiling to floor in one continuous motion. Wipe off your comb and repeat.

Straight lines are just one of your options with the combing technique. You can do a basket weave look, create a plaid pattern or use your imagination and come up with your own unique design!

*Sponging - Sponging is a very easy and fun technique that gives a room a pretty textured look. You first want to choose your base color. This can be any color of your choice. Prepare the walls and apply the base paint. Be sure and fill in nail holes or other imperfections for a smooth finish. Let dry overnight.

After the base coat is dry, you are ready to begin sponging. You can sponge one, two or more colors. It is up to you. Be sure you have an actual sea sponge, not a synthetic sponge. Always keep your sponge damp for smooth application.

Mix the paint with a finishing glaze. Dip the sponge in the paint but do not "over dip". Remove excess paint. Start in the corner and work your way out. Lightly dab the sponge in a random pattern. Do small areas at a time so the paint does not dry where you are working. Be creative with your color combinations and your dabbing patterns. Make those walls come alive!

*Ragging - Ragging is similar to sponging and can produce a very soft, romantic look. Try your rag in several different positions to get the desired effect. Paint the wall with your base color and let dry overnight. Mix your texture color with a glaze finish to soften. Soak your rag in the glaze mixture and blot off the excess. Start dabbing the rag on the wall in various patterns. Add more paint to the rag when it becomes dry.

You can produce a soft effect with less paint or you can use more paint to create a dramatic effect. You can experiment with other materials as well to get a different effect - paper bags, plastic bags, canvas, etc.

*Crackling - This painting technique produces a distressed, aged look. Paint your wall with the chosen base color. Keep in mind that this color will show through your "crackle" cracks. Let dry overnight. Cover your walls with a crackle faux finish. Let dry until there is no tackiness. This will take about 4 hours. Now you will need to apply a second coat being careful not to overlap your brush strokes. In a few minutes the paint will start to crackle exposing your base color underneath.

For fine cracks use a thinner topcoat and for heavier crackling use a thicker topcoat. This technique is great for furniture as well.

*Color Washing - Color washing can give a room a smooth, flowing, graceful look. Paint your walls your base color and let dry overnight. Mix your second color with a faux finish glaze. Start painting with short, overlapped strokes. The more varied and random, the better. Let dry. If you have chosen a third color, repeat the process.

Faux Painting Tips

Practice on some scrap boards or cardboard before you try it on your walls. This will give you some practice and allow you to get comfortable with the technique.

Always have enough supplies on hand and be sure to have everything you need to do the job.

Tape your baseboards, windows, etc. with painter's tape to prevent accidents.

Take your time and be sure to pick out the right colors. You wouldn't want to change your mind in the middle of the job and have to start all over. - 32620
